Don’t forget the final 2010 TCRC training race at ETSU this Sunday, August 8th. Click the Flyer tab to see all of the details. Lets make this the biggest and the best. Remember all of the proceeds go to support TCRC Racing: Road and Cross.

The first two races have been great, lots of fun low key racing, and cool prizes from Hampton Trails Bike Shop.

We need help with set up, so come out and help at 9:00 am Sunday morning if you can. If you can’t make set up stay after and help with take down. Neither task takes to long, nor is it physically demanding.

Also, need help with registration.

Also, any official, new or old, that wants to gain experience scoring crits, please come to the officials tent and we will be glad to help you learn how to score or give you more experience.

Hope to see you there tell a friend, and come have some fun on a closed safe course. Summers almost over, take this opportunity which will translate well to the upcoming CX season.

Training Crit #1: Hot and Fast

Thanks to everyone who attended yesterdays hurt fest, and everyone who volunteered, it was greatly appreciated. Training means different things to different people. For some it was their first crit, for others, it seemed training was to see just how much they could hurt themselves and everyone else in the process. The race of the day had to have been the last one the Pro 1/2/3′s. 60 minutes in 90 degree heat and hot lap times of 1:10 made for a very hard race. Congratulations to Alex Dayton who soloed to victory. After getting a gap on the field with 10 laps to go he maintained it, while his teammates covered attacks in the field behind.

Not bad for a training crit in a parking lot on a holiday weekend.

What is a Criterium

Criterium : French critérium competition, literally, criterion, from Late Latin criterium, from Greek kritērion

Criteriums are closed course races held mainly on downtown city streets and ran for a given number of laps with the ringing of a bell, at the finish line, signaling the final lap. Primes (preems) are announced throughout the race to heat the race up if the pace has slowed.
Criterium racing requires skill in cornering at high-speed, riding in a large group of riders, and the ability to stay with the lead pack and sprint for the win on the final lap. Speeds in criteriums can reach 45 MPH and average 30 MPH over the course of the race. Racing this tight, and at high-speed, requires nerves of steel and a high fitness level. This is why you want to do a training series so you won’t experience this for the first time at a “real” race.

Criteriums originated in Europe and some of the largest and well-known are held immediately following the Tour De France. Even though crits originated in Europe they have become the staple of American road racing over the last 30 years.
